Transformers Movie Bumblebee Robot Image Leaked?

By bwbm on Tuesday, June 27, 2006

In what appears to be another leak for the Transformers movie, Ain't It Cool News has posted an image of what looks like Bumblebee being strapped on a flatbed. This image helps verify a claim which was previously described by an extra who attended the Hoover Dam shoot and saw this in-person.

I sent this as news, but I guess you didn't find it interesting enough... the website for the movie: http://www.transformersmovie.com/ no longer has that crappy SDCC coverage from last year; instead it shows a countdown... for 8 days from now.

Hmmm...

This seems to show that the aesthetic for this movie is both exactly what I expected, and exactly what I was hoping it wouldn't be. The figure of Bumblebee isn't real clear, but it's clear enough.

While not a bad concept for a transforming robot in general, this skeletal "organic machine" aesthetic (similar to the aesthetic in RETURNER and the Citroen commercials) is just NOT a "Transformer" aesthetic.

It's just too radically different to really feel like real TFs. Especially compared to G1, even though this film is supposed to be a sort of G1 redux. I would have hoped they'd take a more traditional approach in their rendering of a "realistic" transformer. Something resembling Alternators for example.

Anyway, this isn't to say the movie will automatically suck because their take on TFs isn't 100% in synch with most fans (I have other reasons for expecting the movie to not be good)... it's just too bad that they're missing the opportunity to do "real" classic-style TFs in a big budget movie. I really wanted to see that. :P

People may disagree, and say I'm too much of a purist about minor details, that if it's a giant transforming robot movie, that should be enough, etc...

But it's not really a minor detail. Consider this as a comparison... What if they made a new Superman movie, but instead of the usual costume, he wore a black leather bodysuit and no cape...?

It might still be a well-made movie. It's still about a flying man who helps people, so it's only a cosmetic difference. But it just wouldn't be right. It would be missing something important, and show that the filmmakers weren't quite "getting it".

That's why I don't like this type of TF design... it might still be a fun movie, but I feel that for me and many other fans, it will be missing something important... that extra "something" that makes a shapechanging robot a real "Transformer".

I'll hold judgement until we see what the front of the robot looks like. Here we can only see the arms, top of the head and an exposed back (which may just be so exposed because this mock-up robot may only be filmed from the front). Plus, this may just be a simplified mock-up just to get lighting effects right for when they insert the CGI robot.

Well said, SMOG.

Honestly, that's a lot better than I expected these robots to look. I'm not quite sure what I expected -- something anorexic, perhaps. I think as long as the movie transformers have plastic (LOTS of plastic) parts, they're going to resemble the characters ENOUGH to be satisfying. I fully expected the dark metal bodies, but the yellow plasti-whatever cars are made of looks great. Of course we haven't seen the lower body yet, but here's a point I'd like to bring up -- Whenever I pester a non-Transformers fan to tell me what they think of a certain figure, sometimes they tell me "It looks too much like a car. When it's a robot, shouldn't it just look like a robot and not a car?" Of course I could debate the point endlessly with them, but it's a valid argument. It doesn't make sense to have Bumblebee be yellow all over. That would essentially make him 50% plastic. Haha. Anyway, I think this image looks pretty good. If the rest of the robots resemble their G1 counterparts this much, they'll all look pretty decent.

Interesting idea about the CG model. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone putting that much work into a piece created as a space holder until a full cg creature is inserted. (and I've worked off and on in movies and commercials for years)- so I'm doubtful, but you never know.

Although I'm not terribly impressed with what I see, I really can't see enough to make heads or tales out of it. It could be great.

From what we can see, as little as that may be, we could already argue that the toys based on the movie designs are gonna have to be -at least- on an Alternator/Binaltech level of complexity... and i'm not sure if that's gonna be enough either.

My guess is that they're gonna be releasing 2 types of toys: Simple, smaller versions, where the transformations and designs are altered, and bigger, more complex, adult/collector-oriented versions that come closer to what you see in the film.

I love this comment.

"if all the movie bots are as complex as that, there's no way Hasbro is going to be able to make fully transformable toys. at most, we'd probably get action masters."

Love it.

And the theme to go with the advert will be...

"New Action master Transformers, they've got the power to be Sh!t"

yea it looks different the what were used to but if really think about alien lifeforms that are also sentiant robots that can transform and also change there transformations (ie, from cybertron vehicles to earth ones) would most likely look more like this with more room for their parts to move and reconfigure then what they did in g1.

i rather like it plus you cant really see all that much of it a lot of key elements are hidden i'm sure when we see more of it we'll be able to notice the resembalacne to a car.

I'm hoping Silverdeck is right... maybe he's been dismantled somewhat by his human captors.

But I still say that this looks like "naked" transformer. He's a skeleton. All his insides are open to the outside. Classic Transformers are made up of parts that really do fold up and move around, so it's not hard to imagine how they would work. This design on the other hand, looks like someone literally turned a car inside out, without any respect for mechanical physics.

So to all of you who say "This is more realistic, because a car would look like this, blah blah blah..." I say phooey on you. MOST machines have a superstructure that PROTECTS the infrastructure... cars, planes, tanks, electronics... so I would expect a robot warrior to at least have some external structure covering his gears and pistons.

I do LOVE the look of the black and yellow painted bits... even though they don't look at all like parts of a car. That further erodes his credibility somewhat...

Who wants a transformer that doesn't show his vehicle elements in his alt mode? That's kind of what makes a TF, isn't it? Otherwise, what makes him different from any old generic humanoid mecha?

Incidentally, you CAN see one of his hands in this picture... it's visible on the right hand side of the photo, attached to the arm hanging off the other side of the cart. His near arm seems to be missing a hand though. Maybe it's been removed (in-script, or just by the props crew I wonder?).
