Transformers 4 Coming in 2014, Says Di Bonaventura; Bay to Return - UPDATED

By Peter Van on Monday, February 13, 2012

Transformers 4 will be out in 2014, says Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, a producer of the first three Transformers live action series.

"We’ll be there in the summer of 2014," he told ComingSoon.net during a press event for the upcoming GI Joe Retaliation.

He told MTV in a video interview (video embedded below) at the same event that the film will be released in summer 2014.

Will Michael Bay return to direct the fourth outing, as has been rumored (and denied) multiple times?

While giving ComingSoon a vague answer, Mr. Di Bonaventura flat out told MTV that he would be returning.

"Michael's going to direct," he tells MTV.

He told ComingSoon that the film will be different than the previous Transformers films, saying that he and Mr. Bay "always like to top ourselves," not in a bigger way, but different.

"[Mr. Bay] is excited," Mr. Di Bonaventure tells MTV.

"[W]e're going to push really hard as fresh and new as we can be."

The producer continues that the current direction for Transformers 4 will be similar to GI Joe Retaliation where several characters from the first film will be back, with a storyline that calls back to the previous films, but not exactly a sequel, nor exactly a reboot.

Elaborating with MTV, he says that "there's still continuity that's going on" but there will be a new cast and a whole new story.

He further emphasized that it will not be a complete reboot like The Amazing Spider-Man, which is hitting theaters this summer.

This idea is inline with how producer Don Murphy said that the franchise would not be rebooted.

What Mr. Di Bonaventura explained will fit into the fact that Shia LaBeouf has said multiple times that he will not return to the franchise.

"We have to get a story first" before "picking characters," he tells MTV. "It's so silly" to even discuss characters or actors that will return.

Mr. Bay's next project is with Dwayne Johnson for Pain and Gain, who, during a press junket for his latest movie Journey 2, referenced that Mr. Bay will return to direct the Transformers franchise.

However, the last time Mr. Bay spoke of returning, he was much more vague, similar to Mr. Di Bonaventura's recent statements. "I'm leaving all of my options on the table," he said back in December 2011.
