Revenge Projected to Have Biggest Worldwide Gross of 09 in 2 Weeks

By bwbm on Thursday, July 02, 2009

Critics be damned. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is poised to be the biggest film grosser at the box office of the 2009 year and all within two weeks of its release date.

The film has amassed $448.4 million to date, with the film performing extremely well in the US domestic and overseas box offices. The current top worldwide grosser is Angels and Demons with $469 million.

Domestically, the film amassed $14.9 million and $13.5 million on Monday and Tuesday respectively for a total of $228.4 million. Meanwhile, foreign moviegoers unloaded $14 million and $16 million, respectively. The foreign total is $220 million.

Just like Transformers, Asian territories are the biggest driver for Revenge of the Fallen. Despite the controversy, China saw its highest opening ever for an English-language film, with $22 million from 1,000 screens.

The Australian debut saw an 80% lead from the first film with $13 million while Russia was 69% higher with $11.8 million.

The film is projected to overtake Disney Pixar's Up in the domestic box office after this weekend.

Harry Potter? Ha, now there's a movie I won't see on general principle. I'd rather see ROTF than a Harry Potter movie. In fact, I'll be rooting for ROTF as it goes up against another Harry Potter movie.

Just imagine how much less money The Dark Knight would have made if Ledger hadn't died. Dark Knight was good, but it wasn't THAT good; RotF was dumb, but it wasn't THAT dumb.

It probably would have been the same. Sure, it might have gotten a few more people to see the movie, but overall, it would have been the same amount of money.

Seriously! We'll never know, but I really wonder what the tally would be if it was shoehorned in between those earlier ones?
